This one is a wild ride my friends!
What is this one about?
Mia Warren and her teenage daughter, Pearl never stay in one place for long. Living the life of a travelling artist, Mia stays put only long enough to be inspired and create a collection until picking up and moving on to the next place.
When the two settle in the serene, idyllic Shaker Heights, Mia tells Pearl this is it- they are settling down, making roots, and calling this town home.
Slowly but surely, Pearl creates connections; friends and an actual teenage life. Mia and Pearls lives get hopelessly intertwined with that of the family from which they rent their apartment.
Who are these people?
The Richardson’s are well liked, respected members of Shaker Heights. With 4 children of their own (all in high school like Pearl), the teenager finds herself embedded into the family tapestry almost seamlessly. But everything is not as picturesque as it may seem on the surface and long buried secrets soon come to light- altering the course of both families forever.
And…what do I think?
This was a FANTASTIC read. Although slow to start, it really picked up steam halfway through and I absolutely tore through the second half.
It was a good look at the complexities of family’s and motherhood which was fascinating and provided an excellent backdrop to some great conflict and tension within the plot line.
The characters were all so dynamic and robust- they really felt real and whole. If contemporary dramas are your jam, this is a must read. As a sidenote- this one was also made into a Hulu original series with the national treasures who are Reece Witherspoon and Kerry Washington which i will 100% be checking out!
Until next week!
